Basic Requirements
1) VISION ACUITY EXAMINATION:
It is important that NDT personnel have good near & general vision acuity and color vision. Therefore, an eye test must be taken to ensure that natural or corrected vision acuity is available to the candidate. Depending on which specification the company uses for certification, an individual must be able to read a Jaeger Number 1 or 2 (or equivalent; 1 for VT personnel) type and size letter at the designated distance. Determining contrast of color (useful in PT, MT) or shades of gray is also generally required (useful in RT).
2) CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
Certification Categories:
There are a number of internationally recognized organizations who have produced documents that recommend or specify the minimum qualifications for certification. The following is a partial list of documents pertaining to the certification of NDT personnel in the US and in other parts of the world.
- SNT-TC-1A, The American Society for Nondestructive Testing, Recommended Practice, Personnel Qualification and Certification in Nondestructive Testing.
- ATA-105 Aviation Transport Association, Guidelines for Training and Qualifying Personnel in Nondestructive Testing Methods.
- AIA-NAS-410, Aerospace Industries Association, National Aerospace Standard, NAS Certification and Qualification of Nondestructive Test Personnel.
- ISO 9712, International Organization for Standards, Nondestructive testing -- Qualification and certification of personnel.
- EN 473
The education and work experience requirements for most of the above specification are common or similar. Typical requirements are summarized in Table 1 below for qualification levels I and II. Please consult the certification documents to assure that information is correct for your situation.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND?
This course is meant for personnel with some NDT knowledge and exposure to some NDT field. HND Pass QC Inspectors, Welding Inspectors as well as Engineers / Supervisors and NDT Level I Certification holders, with a minimum experience of 9 months in NDT field are generally eligible. Managers, Auditors and other senior staff can benefit a lot from these courses.
CANDIDATES CAN LOOK FORWARD TO:
Qualified NDT Level III Instructor(s) usually formulate and also conduct the course. On successful passing of the examination, candidates will receive ASNT Level II Certificate in Radiographic Film Interpretation and Level I or II in other NDT methods depending on their overall performance. Candidates are prepared for the final examination with 1 or 2 mid-session tests in the class and Q&A sessions
